He said “I am sorry Uma, please give me a chance to apologise and explain myself”. Still keeping him at bay, I said “there are other ways to say that, hugging or kissing is definitely not going to work with me”.
We sat down and he again held both my hands in his. I let him because I did not want to be too harsh all at once. He said “Please understand Uma, sixteen years of depravity made me do it. In fact, after she announced her pregnancy we had never been intimate again”.
I replied “but that is not a strong enough reason for behaving like you did”. Charles replied “you are absolutely right Uma. See I have not been with any other woman ever since, you were like love at first sight for me… So I faltered and lost it”.
I replied “fine, now can we resume our class”? He gave me a surprised stare, he asked “does that mean you have forgiven me”? I replied “we will see about that later when the time comes…”.
We resumed our classes and then went up to the terrace to his exclusive corner during break time. Today I was careful to sit a little away from him. He offered me a cigarette which I declined.
He asked “is it because you are still angry with me”? I replied “nothing like that Charles, I will share yours”. He again tried putting his arm around my shoulder but I firmly pushed it off giving him a meaningful stare.
He tried making small talk but I didn’t participate. I made sure as soon as the cigarette was stubbed we headed back. This was like the fastest break we had ever taken together…
Back in the room, he sat with a small gap between us and gradually slid closer. I was well aware of his actions but ignored it. Then when the class was over, I got up to leave while he still remained seated.
I was about to open the door when Charles held my palm and kissed on the back of it. He said “I am really very sorry. Please forgive me. I promise to never be like that again”.
I just looked at him after calming down thinking maybe he really meant it this time but that is to be seen in future… I left from there and met Raja who was waiting for me holding a small bag.
