“Tony, a policeman is asking…” she didn’t have time to finish her sentence before Det. Stanley cut her off. “Mr. Caruso, you won’t mind if my colleague, detective Johnson, asks your secretary a few questions?”
“Not at all. Please Julia, answer all the questions. Things that you don’t know, just say you don’t know.” Tony turns to Stanley, “Hope you are bringing good news.”
“We were at your wife’s work and questioned some co-workers. They all had the same conclusion,” Det. Stanley paused while looking at Tony in the eyes. “The four are very close and there may be something among them.”
“Something?”
“Sex.”
Tony stood up and walked to the window. “It’s hearsay detective. Do you have any proof?”
“Unfortunately, no. But if we dig deeper we may get evidence.”
“So, what’s on your mind, detective?” Tony asked.
Stanley walked to the window and stood by Tony. “We had a warrant to search Bill’s house. The living and the study rooms were very clean, too tidy I would say. As if someone or some people had cleaned it to get rid of any evidence. We succeeded in finding some fresh blood stains on the carpet. Our forensic group is working on it. So, to reply to your question, we think that there is a great possibility that a spouse or someone else came to know about the cheating and took matter in his / her / their hands.”
“In other words, I’m a suspect in your equation?”
“As I mentioned yesterday, we don’t leave any stone unturned.”
“Have you told the same thing to John or Steve’s wives?”
“Not yet, but soon. You are the only one to have a strong alibi.”
“Which means?”
“I’m just saying, Mr. Caruso.”
At the same time Tony’s cell phone rang. He took the call. It was Josh.
“There is a group of reporters in front of my house,” he told Stanley.
“They are doing their job, as long as they stay on the street. I will send a policeman there.”
“Thank you, detective.”
In the afternoon Tony could see a group of reporters and TV crew blocking his driveway. The police had to disperse them for him to be able to drive into his garage. They were asking several questions at the same time. He ignored them and drove straight inside his property. Josh and Mary were waiting for him with anxious looks. The only thing he could tell them was that the police was still investigating.
In the warehouse that Tuesday evening the four captives were extremely weak from all the torture and abuse. One by one they were sent to the bathroom and were washed thoroughly including their holes. They were wrapped in large towels and made to wait. Then came Dr. Rojas with his surgical cap and mask. No one would be able to recognize him. Dr. Rojas was jailed for illegal drugs that he gave to athletes and his license was revoked. In prison Uncle Joe had made sure that he had the necessary protection. In some ways, he was indebted to Uncle Joe.
“Are they ready?” the doctor asked.
“They are,” answered one masked captor.
“Ok, bring them one by one to the other room. I’ll see the lady last.”
All four friends started panicking.
Wednesday early morning Tony woke up from a deep sleep when his cellphone rang.
